AMA WARNS: Ghana’s 2030 methane target at risk

Ghana could struggle to achieve its 2030 methane emissions reduction target if challenges in waste management are not urgently addressed, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has warned.

The warning comes amid renewed calls from stakeholders for increased funding, improved waste management systems and the adoption of waste separation practices to help reduce methane emissions.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming. In urban areas, decomposing organic waste in landfills and dumpsites can release methane into the atmosphere, making effective waste management an important part of climate action.

Stakeholders say inadequate financial resources and the limited separation of waste at its source could undermine efforts to reduce emissions and improve environmental conditions.

They are therefore advocating greater investment in waste collection, recycling, composting and other sustainable waste management initiatives.

Separating organic waste from plastics and other materials could also improve recycling, reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills and support the recovery of useful resources.

The call for action highlights the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, local assemblies, private waste management companies, civil society organisations and households.

Increased public education and community participation are also considered important to ensuring that waste separation becomes a regular practice.

With the 2030 target approaching, stakeholders are urging authorities to strengthen implementation efforts and provide the necessary resources to support practical interventions.

The AMA’s warning underscores the importance of addressing waste management challenges as part of Ghana’s broader efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build more sustainable cities.
