Libya Summons US Envoy Over Trump’s Remarks

Libya has summoned the United States’ chargé d’affaires to lodge a formal diplomatic protest over remarks made by President Donald Trump about the North African country during a political rally in the United States.

Libya’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that it had called in the American diplomatic representative following comments Trump made at a rally in Perry, Georgia, on Saturday. The ministry described the remarks as offensive and said it rejected statements that undermine the dignity of the Libyan people or diminish the country’s standing.

The diplomatic move highlights tensions between Tripoli and Washington over the language used by the US president while discussing immigration and countries from which migrants travel to the United States.

Trump’s remarks spark diplomatic backlash

During the rally, Trump described Libya, alongside Yemen, Haiti and Somalia, as countries affected by terrorism while criticising immigration policies and Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff.

His remarks drew strong objections from Libyan officials, who argued that the country and its people should not be used as part of political disputes within the United States.

Libya’s foreign ministry said the country rejected statements that threatened the dignity of its citizens. It also emphasised that relations between nations should be based on mutual respect, national sovereignty and established diplomatic principles.

The internationally recognised Government of National Unity in western Libya demanded an official clarification and correction of the remarks through a formal diplomatic note. Libya’s eastern-based political authorities also criticised the comments, underscoring the breadth of opposition across the country’s rival political camps.

Trump later strikes a more conciliatory tone

Following the backlash, Trump issued a statement on his Truth Social platform expressing a commitment to relations with Libya.

He described Libyans as proud, resilient and hospitable people who deserved peace and prosperity. He also acknowledged their sacrifices in the fight against Islamic State militants, an organisation that has threatened security in Libya and other parts of the region.

However, Trump maintained his position on migration, saying Libya could not remain a corridor for illegal migration and that the situation needed to end.

The statement combined praise for the Libyan people with a continued demand for action on migration, leaving questions about how the diplomatic dispute might affect relations between the two countries.

Implications for Libya-US relations

The dispute comes as Libya continues to grapple with political divisions, security challenges and the long-running effort to unify its institutions and move towards national elections.

The United States has maintained an interest in Libya’s stability, counterterrorism cooperation and migration routes across North Africa and the Mediterranean. A diplomatic disagreement over presidential rhetoric could complicate public perceptions of that relationship, even if both sides continue to pursue shared interests.

Libya’s decision to summon the American chargé d’affaires sends a message that its authorities expect public statements about the country to respect its sovereignty and population.

For Washington, the challenge will be to address Libya’s objections while maintaining diplomatic engagement on security, migration and political stability.

It remains to be seen whether the exchange will lead to further diplomatic measures or whether both governments will move towards easing tensions through official channels.
