Spotify Premieres Runtown’s ‘Surround Sound’ Film 10 Years After ‘Mad Over You’
Spotify has premiered Runtown Surround Sound, a full-length concert film celebrating the musical journey of Nigerian singer Runtown, marking 10 years since the release of his hit song Mad Over You.
The film, which premiered on November 4, 2026, was directed by Tim Horwood and filmed in the round in Lagos, offering viewers an intimate experience of Runtown’s music, career highlights and the moments that have shaped his journey in the industry.
The anniversary comes as Mad Over You continues to attract listeners across the world, with Spotify data showing that the song had accumulated 140.7 million lifetime streams as of September 15, 2026.
Interestingly, the track recorded 36.6 million streams in 2026 up to September 15, already surpassing the 33.4 million streams it accumulated throughout the whole of 2025.
A decade after its release, the song also maintains a strong presence among listeners, featuring in more than three million user-created playlists on Spotify.
The Surround Sound concert film places the song’s continued popularity within the broader story of Runtown’s musical career, taking audiences through four chapters that explore different sounds, experiences and moods reflected in his catalogue.
The performance begins with songs such as Lagos to Kampala, Tradition, Kini Issue, If E Happen for Lagos, and Gallardo.
It then explores the emotional and musical dimensions of Runtown’s work through tracks including Dangerous Heart, Painkiller and High Spirit.
Mad Over You takes centre stage in the final chapter, which also features Unleash and concludes with Energy.
According to Rifumo Mdaka, Spotify’s Content Marketing Manager for Africa, the project celebrates the lasting relationship between Runtown and his listeners.
“‘Mad Over You’ has become part of people’s lives, and the listening shows that the relationship is still growing. Surround Sound gives us a way to celebrate that connection through Runtown’s wider catalogue, with the artist and his fans at the centre. This film carries the intimacy of the Lagos performance to everyone who wants to experience it,” Mdaka said.
Recorded with fans surrounding the stage, the performance captures the close connection between Runtown and his audience, allowing viewers to experience the atmosphere of the live show while revisiting some of his most recognised songs.
The four-chapter arrangement also creates room for both familiar hits and selections from his wider catalogue, presenting different sides of his artistry within one musical experience.
Director Tim Horwood explained that the structure was deliberately designed to reflect the different moods and progression of Runtown’s music.
“The four chapters give us room to explore the different moods in Runtown’s music. We wanted the film to carry that progression and the feeling of being surrounded by people who know these songs intimately. By the time we reach ‘Mad Over You,’ the audience has travelled through the wider world that gives that song its place,” Horwood noted.
Surround Sound is Spotify’s live performance format, which originated in Sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative brings musicians together with selected Spotify Premium subscribers for intimate live performances that are captured as full-length music films.
For the Lagos recordings, selected Premium subscribers were invited based on their listening behaviour, giving dedicated fans the opportunity to experience the performances up close.
Through the project, Spotify continues to create opportunities for artists to connect with their audiences while presenting their music and musical journeys through immersive live performance experiences.
