World Leaders React as Lula Secures Fourth Term as Brazil’s President
International leaders have reacted to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s election victory, with congratulations coming from Europe, Asia, Africa and across Latin America following his closely contested presidential run-off against right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
Lula secured a fourth non-consecutive presidential term after receiving 51.8 per cent of the vote, compared with Bolsonaro’s 48.2 per cent, according to reported election results. The outcome marks a significant political development for Brazil, Latin America’s largest country.
Leaders congratulate Lula
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the result, saying democracy and multilateralism had prevailed in Brazil. She also expressed the European Union’s interest in continuing cooperation with the South American country on trade, climate action and international relations.
French President Emmanuel Macron similarly called for stronger strategic ties between France and Brazil, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted opportunities to expand trade, environmental cooperation and economic prosperity.
In Latin America, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated the outcome, declaring that Brazil’s people had won. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel also praised Lula’s victory, describing it as a continuation of the country’s pursuit of sovereignty and social justice.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Lula and expressed interest in deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described the outcome as a victory for progressive forces and the Global South.
The responses underline the importance many governments attach to maintaining diplomatic and economic relations with Brazil.
Victory draws criticism and controversy
Despite the international congratulations, the election outcome has also generated criticism.
Flávio Bolsonaro has challenged the legitimacy of the result and called for the election to be annulled, pointing to a two-hour extension of voting time authorised by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin. Both campaigns had reportedly requested additional voting time amid transportation difficulties and heavy rain.
In the United States, Donald Trump Jr criticised the extension, while Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders congratulated Lula, praising his record on workers’ rights and democracy.
The differing responses reflect broader ideological divisions surrounding Lula’s political return, as well as competing views on the election process and Brazil’s direction under his leadership.
Implications for Brazil and the wider world
Lula’s victory is likely to influence Brazil’s relationships with major global powers, particularly in areas such as international trade, climate policy and cooperation among emerging economies.
Brazil plays an important role in the BRICS grouping and has sought to maintain relationships with a range of international partners. Lula’s return is expected to keep these diplomatic priorities in focus, although the practical direction of foreign policy will depend on negotiations and developments during his next term.
At home, the president will face the task of addressing economic pressures, public concerns about security and political divisions following a closely fought campaign. His ability to build support for his policies will be central to translating the election result into effective governance.
For now, the international response signals both optimism among supporters and continuing political tensions surrounding Brazil’s future.
As congratulations continue to arrive, attention is turning to how Lula will use his new mandate to address domestic challenges and shape Brazil’s role on the global stage.
