Ekow Sampson Calls for National Strategy to Boost Cruise Tourism in Ghana
Architect Ekow Sampson has called for increased investment and a coordinated national strategy to position Ghana as a leading cruise tourism destination in West Africa.
He believes the country has the potential to transform cruise tourism into a major contributor to its tourism economy, citing its Atlantic coastline, ports at Tema and Takoradi, historic forts and castles, vibrant culture, beaches and natural attractions.
In an article titled Cruise Tourism: Unlocking a New Economic Frontier for Ghana, Sampson argued that Ghana must take advantage of the growing global cruise industry to generate foreign exchange, create employment and expand opportunities for local businesses.
According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), 37.2 million passengers took ocean cruises in 2025, highlighting the industry’s growing economic significance and the opportunities available to destinations capable of attracting international cruise operators.
Sampson, who highlighted his professional involvement in promoting Ghana’s cruise tourism potential, disclosed that he led a Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) delegation to explore the cruise tourism market in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2023.
He also led another GTA delegation in 2024 to participate in the Seatrade Cruise Global Exhibition in Miami, Florida, where the team engaged industry stakeholders and explored strategies to position Ghana within the international cruise market.
Despite these engagements, he noted that Ghana’s cruise passenger arrivals have experienced fluctuations.
The country recorded approximately 12,600 cruise passengers in 2024. However, the figure declined to 5,488 passengers across 18 cruise ship calls in 2025.
He said the decline highlights the need for sustained international marketing, stronger industry partnerships and deliberate efforts to develop Ghana’s cruise tourism infrastructure.
Sampson identified the ports of Tema and Takoradi as strategic gateways through which Ghana could attract cruise passengers and connect them to the country’s major tourism attractions.
He explained that Tema provides access to Accra’s historical landmarks, cultural experiences, gastronomy, shopping centres and entertainment activities.
Takoradi, on the other hand, offers opportunities to develop tourist excursions around historic forts and castles, beaches, Kakum National Park and other attractions in the Central and Western regions.
However, he stressed that attracting cruise ships to Ghana’s ports should not be the only priority, arguing that the country must also invest in facilities that provide passengers with a comfortable and welcoming experience.
He called on the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to establish dedicated and well-equipped cruise tourism reception facilities at both Tema and Takoradi ports.
According to him, such facilities should include passenger reception centres, tourist information and excursion desks, organised parking spaces for tour buses and taxis, efficient immigration and customs services, clean public toilets, comfortable waiting areas and adequate security arrangements.
He further recommended the provision of designated spaces for Ghanaian crafts and retail businesses to enable local entrepreneurs to benefit directly from cruise passenger arrivals.
Sampson also emphasised the need for GPHA to collaborate with the Ghana Tourism Authority, security agencies, tour operators and local assemblies to ensure a seamless, safe and welcoming experience for visitors.
He maintained that Ghana’s ports must be developed into professional tourism gateways capable of creating positive first impressions of the country.
Beyond increasing international visitor arrivals, Sampson believes cruise tourism could generate significant economic opportunities for individuals and businesses across the tourism value chain.
He explained that cruise passengers spend money on excursions, transportation, food, souvenirs and entertainment while visiting destinations.
Some passengers also choose to extend their visits before or after their cruises, creating additional business opportunities for hotels and other tourism establishments.
He noted that a positive experience during a cruise stopover could encourage visitors to return to Ghana for longer holidays in the future.
Sampson, however, stressed that local communities must become direct beneficiaries of the industry.
He identified tour guides, artisans, craft sellers, restaurants, cultural groups and transport operators as some of the groups that could benefit from increased cruise tourism activities.
To achieve this, he called for investment in workforce training, sanitation, security, access roads, visitor facilities and environmental protection.
He argued that developing the necessary infrastructure and improving service delivery would be critical to ensuring that cruise tourism contributes meaningfully to local economic development.
Sampson further called for the development of a comprehensive national cruise tourism strategy involving key public institutions and private-sector stakeholders.
He identified the Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, Forestry Commission, District and Municipal Assemblies, tour operators and private investors as essential partners in the process.
He outlined several priorities for the proposed strategy, including stronger engagement with international cruise lines, improved international marketing, the development of attractive shore excursions, modernised port facilities, workforce training and increased community participation.
According to him, collaboration among these institutions would help Ghana address existing gaps and establish a more competitive cruise tourism industry.
Reflecting on his engagements with international cruise tourism stakeholders in Fort Lauderdale in 2023 and Miami in 2024, Sampson said the experiences had strengthened his conviction that cruise tourism deserved a more prominent position in Ghana’s tourism development agenda.
He maintained that the industry presents an opportunity for Ghana to generate foreign exchange, create jobs, support local enterprises and promote its cultural and natural attractions to the international community.
Sampson concluded that with strategic investment, improved infrastructure and effective collaboration, Ghana could capture a greater share of the global cruise tourism market.
He stressed the need for the country to move beyond being merely a port of call and work towards becoming a destination of choice for international cruise passengers.

Odumodublvck Claims Some Musicians Use Voodoo to Get Hit Songs
Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has suggested that some musicians turn to spiritual practices, popularly known as jazz, in an attempt to achieve musical success and produce hit songs.
He observed while discussing the challenges of maintaining commercial relevance in the music industry, particularly the pressure on artistes to consistently release songs that appeal to listeners.
According to the rapper, producing a hit record is far more difficult than many people realise, explaining that some musicians become frustrated when their efforts fail to generate the expected attention and popularity.
“Getting a hit song is not easy. Sometimes people even do jazz to get one. That’s why you see some artistes crashing out when they struggle to get a hit,” he said.
Odumodublvck mentioned Nigerian music heavyweights Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido as examples of artistes who have managed to sustain their success by consistently releasing commercially successful songs over the years.
He questioned how the three musicians had maintained such impressive runs, considering that while some artistes repeatedly produce songs that dominate the charts, others spend their entire careers without recording a major hit.
His comments draw attention to the intense pressure within the music industry, where an artiste’s relevance and success are often judged by the commercial performance and public reception of their releases.

Kuami Eugene Reveals Challenges That Pushed Him Away from Gospel Music
Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene, popularly known as the Rockstar, has opened up about his decision to switch from gospel music to secular music, citing the challenges upcoming gospel artistes face in gaining recognition and breaking into the industry.
Speaking in a recent on Joy Prime’s Changes show, the singer explained that Ghana’s gospel music industry is not structured to support emerging musicians, making it difficult for them to achieve mainstream success.
According to him, genres such as Afrobeats and Highlife enjoy greater exposure on digital platforms, particularly TikTok, allowing relatively unknown musicians to gain popularity with just one song.
“The industry here in Ghana is not structured to benefit an upcoming gospel artiste. You can be Afrobeats or Highlife music; TikTok loves music like that. That’s why you keep seeing young boys popping up with just maybe one single song and everybody is jamming to it,” he said.
Kuami Eugene further attributed the challenges facing gospel musicians to the attitudes and perceptions of Ghanaian music audiences, arguing that listeners often pay more attention to an artiste’s appearance than the message being communicated through the music.
He observed that some gospel musicians are judged based on their dressing, accessories and personal appearance, rather than the spiritual content of their performances.
“It’s difficult to break through with gospel music because of how we’ve been tuned to listen to gospel music. We judge everything. If a guy is singing gospel right now, instead of us being soaked in the presence of God, our attention is on the fact that he’s wearing a chain, or he’s radical to sing worship. So he’ll sing and there’s no impact,” he explained.
He added that such judgments can affect the reception of gospel music, even when the artistes deliver their best performances.
Reflecting on his own experience, the Wish Me Well hitmaker disclosed that he made efforts to establish himself in gospel music but struggled to achieve the recognition he desired.
He said his transition into secular music opened up more opportunities for him, making it easier to gain public attention in an industry where talent and musical ability often determine an artiste’s success.
Despite moving away from gospel music as a performer, Kuami Eugene maintained that he continues to contribute to the gospel music industry through songwriting and production.
He revealed that he has written and produced several popular gospel songs for other musicians, insisting that his involvement in gospel music has not ended.
“But I think I’m still doing the work of God anyway. Most of the big gospel songs you enjoy, I wrote and produced them by the grace of God. So I’m still doing the job, just that I’m not doing it myself; I’m giving them out to be done,” he said.
The musician also hinted at plans to include at least one gospel-inspired song in every project he releases to satisfy fans who appreciate that side of his music.
Meanwhile, Kuami Eugene has released a new song titled Ajei, an upbeat and entertaining track that is already attracting attention from music lovers.

Davido Says Wizkid Collaboration Could Command $500,000 Per Show
Afrobeats superstar Davido has expressed confidence that a joint tour with fellow Nigerian singer Wizkid would attract massive audiences and sell out venues across the world, saying he would charge $500,000 per show if they embarked on the tour together.
Davido made the revelation during an appearance on the IONWANNATALK show, where he discussed the possibility of collaborating with Wizkid on music and performing together on an international tour.
While he was optimistic about the commercial potential of a joint tour, the singer admitted that he was uncertain whether a song recorded with Wizkid would become a major hit.
He cited the collaboration between Nigerian music veterans D’banj and 2Baba as an example, suggesting that bringing two major artistes together does not automatically guarantee a successful record.
“If Wizkid and I do a song together, I don’t know if it will pop because when D’banj and 2Baba did a record together, it didn’t really pop,” Davido said.
However, he expressed greater confidence in their ability to attract audiences through live performances, insisting that their combined popularity would guarantee sold-out venues.
“If we tour together, I’ll ask for $500,000 per show because I know every venue will sell out,” he stated.
Davido further disclosed that he and Wizkid had not recorded a song together in approximately 10 years, explaining that their inability to work in the same creative space had prevented them from collaborating.
According to him, they had not been in the same mental space for a long time, although he acknowledged that opinions differ on whether their long-standing rivalry has contributed to their individual success or whether a collaboration could take their careers to another level.
The singer also reflected on the importance of maturity in moving beyond disagreements and changing one’s position on issues.
He explained that people should be willing to acknowledge when their feelings about someone have changed rather than remain committed to past disagreements.
“I felt that way at some point but not anymore, and it takes a great man to do that,” he said.

Empress Gifty Defends Florence Obinim Over BBL Criticism
In a video shared on social media on November 1, 2026, Empress Gifty expressed disappointment over comments directed at Florence after she attended a public programme, where some social media users speculated that she had undergone cosmetic surgery.
She particularly questioned why some of the harshest remarks came from women, arguing that people should understand the physical and emotional challenges associated with surgical procedures before ridiculing others.
“Florence Obinim went for a programme, and when you read the comments, people were talking about BBL. What is even more disappointing is that some of the comments came from women. Do you even have the courage to enter the theatre?” she asked.
Empress Gifty, who has undergone surgical procedures herself, described the experience of entering an operating theatre as frightening, explaining that patients often experience anxiety because of the risks involved.
Comparing the experience to surgical childbirth, she stressed that undergoing an operation is not something people should make light of.
“All of us who have entered the theatre have spirits. As you are about to enter, you will just be panicking. Ask those who have given birth in the theatre; it’s between life and death,” she said.
She also cautioned social media users against directing their personal frustrations at celebrities, noting that public figures equally face challenges despite their fame and public visibility.
“We’re not responsible for your happiness. Don’t bring your frustrations on any celebrities because the celebrities also have problems,” she added.
Beyond defending Florence Obinim, Empress Gifty opened up about her own cosmetic procedures and challenged people to respect the decisions others make about their bodies and finances.
The gospel musician disclosed that she had booked another dental appointment after previously spending $1,200 on treatment. She revealed that the new procedure is expected to cost approximately $8,000.
Explaining her decision, Empress Gifty said she wants to improve her ability to chew meat properly, insisting that her choice is based on personal comfort rather than public expectations.
“Don’t try to ridicule the person for what she used her money and strength for. I’ve booked an appointment to fix my teeth again, and it cost $1,200 initially, but the one I want to do now costs about $8,000,” she disclosed.
“I want to fix it so that I can chew meat properly, and that’s what I want to do with my money,” she added.
She further argued that people have different spending priorities, with some choosing to buy clothes and jewellery while others invest in property and other interests.
“Someone will use their money for dresses, another person will buy gold necklaces, while someone else will use theirs to buy cement. Allow people to do what they want with their money, and as for me, I don’t listen to anybody anymore,” she stated.
Empress Gifty also revealed that she had undergone breast reduction surgery after previously having a larger bust.
According to her, she conducted extensive research before the procedure, particularly on how to maintain skin firmness and prevent sagging following weight loss.
“When you all knew me, I used to have big breasts, but now, I’ve made them small. I didn’t want my breasts to sag after the surgery, so I did a lot of research to make my skin firm after the weight loss,” she revealed.
She maintained that people should not be judged for choosing cosmetic procedures, particularly when they have the financial means and are comfortable with their decisions.
The musician, however, urged individuals considering cosmetic surgery to conduct thorough research and seek professional medical advice before proceeding.
She advised prospective patients to consult qualified practitioners and undergo counselling to understand the possible risks, benefits, recovery process and precautions associated with the procedures.
“Whenever you want to do something, do proper research and go to the right people who have learnt and have knowledge about what you are about to do. Go for counselling so they can educate you on the dos and don’ts before you decide whether to proceed or not. Do you know what people go through?” she asked.

Edem Reveals Reason for Last-Minute Postponement of Edemfest 2026
Ghanaian rapper Edem has announced the postponement of the 2026 edition of Edemfest, days before the annual music and cultural festival was due to take place in the Volta Region.
The festival, organised by the Volta Regime Music Group (VRMG), was initially scheduled for November 7. However, in a statement released on Monday, November 2, the organisers disclosed that the event would not go ahead as planned.
VRMG explained that the decision was influenced by a strategic opportunity which they believe could contribute significantly to the festival’s future development. The organisers added that a new date would be communicated after the necessary arrangements had been finalised.
They noted that the decision forms part of efforts to broaden the scope of Edemfest and transform it into a bigger platform beyond music and cultural entertainment.
According to the group, the long-term objective is to create more opportunities for the Volta Region by showcasing its music, cultural heritage, traditions and tourism potential while positioning the area as an attractive destination for cultural experiences.
Edem, popularly known as Ayigbe Edem, said the move was intended to elevate the festival and increase its impact on the region.
He explained that the event had grown through the support of the people and the rich cultural identity of the Volta Region, adding that the new opportunity presented a chance to achieve even greater results.
“Edemfest has grown because of the people, the culture and the support behind it. We see an opportunity to take the festival further and create even greater value for the region, and we believe it is worth pursuing,” he stated.
The rapper also expressed regret over the change in plans, apologising to patrons and stakeholders while thanking them for their patience, understanding and continued commitment to the festival.
Meanwhile, VRMG has clarified that the Jubilee Radio Health Walk will still take place as scheduled, although Edem will not participate in the activity.
The organisers further acknowledged the contributions of their sponsors, partners, artistes, creatives, participants and other stakeholders who supported preparations for the 2026 edition.
Further information, including the revised date for Edemfest, is expected to be announced through the festival’s official communication platforms.
